Dreams that refuse to die

By: Jagun Quareeb Alabi

When people hear that a child has a condition that weakens the muscles, many assume the child’s dreams are over. But that’s not true. A disability doesn’t mean hope is lost; it just makes the journey longer, but the dreams remain alive.

Dreams Belong to Everyone

Children with muscular dystrophy, spinal muscular atrophy, or other neuromuscular conditions have big dreams just like every other child. They want to become doctors, teachers, artists, and leaders. They want to learn, play, laugh, and be part of the world. They do not need pity. They need support, love, and real chances to show their abilities. When we give them education, care, and acceptance, they become unstoppable.

Stories of Hope

Across Nigeria, warriors living with muscular dystrophy and other neuromuscular conditions are proving every day that disability does not erase ability. Some have started clubs in their schools and universities to advocate for inclusion. Others run small businesses, supporting their families and communities with pride. These real-life stories remind us that with opportunity, dreams refuse to die.

The Role of Support

When children are given the chance to work, empowered by skill development, and welcomed by the gift of education, their dreams blossom. Support for small businesses, inclusive schools, and scholarships can uncover hidden talents and turn them into outstanding successes. Without these important supports, even the brightest dreams can fade away.

How We Can Help

We can make a meaningful difference by encouraging children with disabilities to remain in school, ensuring they have access to education and the confidence to pursue their dreams, no matter the challenges they face. We can also support vocational training programs and empower businesses run by resilient warriors, providing them with the tools, resources, and mentorship they need to thrive and create sustainable livelihoods. Most importantly, we can celebrate every achievement, big or small, acknowledging the courage, effort, and determination behind each success, and inspiring these incredible individuals to continue striving for excellence.

Hope for Tomorrow

Hope has great power. It gives families the strength to support them and gives kids the bravery to keep going. Children who have weak muscles are pleading for the opportunity to learn, dream, and live fully, not for sympathy.

We all have a part to play as a community. Our voices, our inclusivity, and our kindness have the power to transform lives. We are not doing charity when we provide children with access to healthcare, education, assistive technology, and acceptance; rather, we are restoring their future.

No child should be made to feel less because they use a wheelchair, walk differently, or move differently. They’re not damaged. They are courageous.

We can improve tomorrow if we work together. By working together, we can create a Nigeria in which every child whether walking or in a wheelchair, can confidently say, “My future is waiting for me, and I am ready for it.”
