Caregivers: The indispensable

World duchenne awareness day 2025 flier promoting an event to raise awareness about duchenne muscular dystrophy

Every year, September 7th is marked globally as World Duchenne Awareness Day, a day dedicated to raising awareness about Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD), a rare neuromuscular condition that affects thousands of families worldwide. Beyond the challenges faced by individuals living with Duchenne, there is another group whose stories are often untold but whose roles are indispensable, The caregivers.

This year, the Foundation for Neuromuscular Support Nigeria (FNSN) is shining a spotlight on caregivers through its one-day virtual seminar titled “Caring for the Caregivers.” The event will take place on Sunday, September 7th, 2025, at 5 PM (WAT).

Why Caregivers Matter

Caregivers – parents, siblings, relatives, and even professional aides play a central role in the lives of individuals living with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. They provide physical support, emotional strength, and daily care that ensures dignity and quality of life. Yet, caregivers themselves often face burnout, stress, and emotional exhaustion, with little attention paid to their well-being.

By dedicating this year’s awareness event to caregivers, the Foundation for Neuromuscular Support Nigeria is acknowledging their resilience, sacrifices, and needs.

Speakers & Topics

The seminar will feature Dare Joseph Akinfosile, an Emergency Response Specialist, who will speak on “Staying Safe While You Care.” He will share simple tips to help caregivers protect themselves while supporting others.

We’ll also hear from Dr. Akhere Akran, a DEIB Strategist, on “Prioritizing Self-Care and Avoiding Burnout in Caregivers.” Her talk will highlight why looking after yourself is key to giving the best care.

What to Expect at the Seminar

The Caring for the Caregivers seminar will be a space to learn, share, and connect. Experts will talk about caregiver health, mental well-being, and practical ways to make care more sustainable. Families and communities living with Duchenne will share their stories, giving hope and encouragement to others.

There will also be open discussions on how to build stronger support networks in Nigeria and beyond. By the end, participants will leave not only with useful knowledge, but also with fresh hope and simple tools to care better for their loved ones and for themselves.
